Oracle Cards vs. Tarot Cards (Is There A Difference?)

Are you just starting out on your tarot journey and have no idea what oracle cards are? Maybe you’re on Instagram and see people doing readings using both oracle and tarot cards, yet you don’t know the difference.

It’s easy to be confused when it comes to oracle cards vs. tarot cards. Many beginners wonder if you just read one or the other, or if you can read both.

By the end of this post you’ll know the difference between oracle and tarot cards and get started using both today!

Oracle Cards vs. Tarot Cards

Oracle cards are used as a tool for spiritual insight and messages from your higher self, much like the tarot but with fewer rules.

Most tarot decks are based off the Rider-Waite deck, which is The Godfather of tarot decks. These decks usually have 78 cards and similar meanings throughout the cards.

Of course, there are hundreds of tarot decks with their own unique images and symbols. However, they all have a universal theme so no matter what deck you’re using, the message is the same. In the post 7 Bullsh*t Tarot Myths You Need To Let Go Of I used the High Priestess card for an example. Though the images were different, the meaning behind them were the same.

With oracle cards, there is no limit to how many cards one can have. There are some decks with 12 cards, others with 50. Some even have 100!

Also with oracle cards the pictures, meanings, and symbolisms are usually one of a kind and unique to the deck. Themes and messages in oracle decks can be an array of things. They can be messages from angels, career guidance, love messages, mermaid cards, spirit animal messages and much more!

Which One Should You Choose?

Honestly using both oracle and tarot cards can help you strengthen your intuition and get a better understanding of your reading. If you want you can even use them together!

Oracle cards will help you understand the overall theme of the situation while tarot cards will break it down for you in terms of whether it plays a major or minor part in your life and what’s going on.

So now that you know the difference between oracle cards vs. tarot cards, will you be using both in your readings? Which one’s are your favorite? Let me know in the comments!
