How To Recognize Your Intuition

It’s a beautiful day outside. You’re walking along the road when you come across a shop and get the urge to go in. While browsing you find the book that you’ve been looking for months to find.

You’ve been wanting to move but haven’t got a clue where. One day you’re chilin’ and the word Chicago flashes in your mind. You go and visit the city and know this is the exact place you need to be.

Everyday you take the street to work. However, on this particular day you hear a voice say take the highway. Later, you find out there was a traffic light out and traffic was backed up for 45 minutes.

These are all examples of using and acting on your intuition, an ability that all humans possess, whether you’re consciously aware or not.

What Is Intuition?

Intuition is the process of perceiving or knowing information, bypassing any linear thinking, logical, or intellectual reasoning. There is a sense of knowing something without any concrete facts or evidence. Many times its subtle and you may question whether its real or not. It can come as a hunch, a vision, a thought, or what is best needed to get your attention.

There are multiple ways that one can access their intuition consciously, especially through the use of the “clairs.”

Have you ever seen a word, picture, or place flash through your mind that led you to say or do something that you or someone else needed? These examples fall into the category of clairvoyance, also known as “clear seeing.” It is an extra sensory perception where one sees and receives messages with the inner eye.

Some years ago I was in love with a guy who I knew wasn’t right for me. Unfortunately, I didn’t listen to myself and still pursued him. One day I was taking a bath and became extremely relaxed. I asked the universe what it would be like if him and I got together. I closed my eyes and continued to get in a deeper state of relaxation. Suddenly, the word ‘depressed’ flashed in my mind. I tried shrugging it off and shortly after, him and I got into a relationship. Within a month or so, the relationship became draining and I was depressed. After a few months the relationship dramatically ended.

Those who have vivid imaginations and are visually creative tend to receive messages through clairvoyance, though this is possible without those qualities. Some who are exceptionally skilled with this gift can see in the past or future.

“Clear hearing” is the gist of clairaudience. It’s being able to receive a message intuitively through the use of sound such as music, a voice, and even the TV. Ancestors, spirit guides, angels, or beings from higher dimensions can be heard by those who are clairaudient. Sometimes the messages are loud and clear while in other instances it may be subtle. A lot of times it comes during a moment in your life when you’re looking for guidance and advice. For example, you may be contemplating taking a particular job and as you’re watching TV, a character from the show you’re watching says the exact words “take the job.” Upon hearing that, you automatically know you were meant to hear that.

It is important to note that if you hear a voice that wants to control you or tell you to do harm to yourself or others, it is not coming from your higher self or any being that wants the best for you. Messages received through clairaudience should make you feel more at peace and ease with your life and helps to bring clarity.

One of the most common ways people have experienced an intuitive message is through the use of claircognizance, aka “clear knowing.” It’s the ability to know information about someone, a situation, or place without any logical reasoning or facts. It’s an inner knowing. You probably won’t be able to explain how you know, but you know you’re right.

About six years ago I felt the need to attend the annual Indiana Black Expo. I hadn’t been in years, but a month before the expo I knew I needed to go this year. While at the Black Expo, I met someone who introduced me to reincarnation, astrology, and healthy eating which are topics that I am passionate about til’ this day. My Higher Self knew going to expo would help me in my spiritual studies even though I didn’t consciously understand why. There are other examples of people just ‘knowing.’ I have a friend who no matter what I try and hide from her, she just knows what it is. I once quit my job and didn’t tell anyone. I was texting her about nothing in particular and she just randomly asked me if I still had my job. I didn’t tell her at the time that I had quit but later when I did she said she just knew.

Those who have a high sense of self-awareness and trust within themselves are usually naturally claircognizant. They have an easier time trusting themselves and will listen and if needed, act on the messages they receive.

Being able to feel and sense others moods, pains, or other emotions one may be projecting is considered clairsentience, or “clear feeling.” It is a natural ability among empaths because of their ability to pick up on others feelings.

A woman in a good mood who walks into a room of people and immediately begins to feel uneasy or nervous may have picked up on the tension of two people who just got into a heated argument five minutes prior to her entering.

Another example would be a man who is in a melancholy mood runs into a friend who is in great spirits. Upon contact with this friend, the man’s mood starts to lift and by the time they depart, the man is in a good mood as well.

Sometimes people who are clairsentient are called overly sensitive. It can be hard to differentiate their feelings from others. Sometimes those who have a natural talent at clairsentience can be taken advantage of by what are called ‘psychic vampires.’ Psychic vampires are people who feed off the energy, or life force of others in order to energize themselves. They may take up a lot of your time and energy and leave you feeling drained and unmotivated. It is important for clairsentient people to practice psychic protection in order to protect themselves.

Lesser Known “Clairs”

“Clear tasting.” When one is able to taste a substance without putting anything in their mouth.

“Clear smell.” Being able to smell a particular scent without any food or fragrance in one’s surroundings.

Once I was thinking about incense because I love the smell of it. Before I even realized what was happening, I got a whiff of my favorite incense, and in a flash it was gone. I didn’t have any around me either so I was pretty baffled at the time until I learned what clairscent was.

“Clear touching.” Popularly known as psychometry. It’s when a person touches an object and is able to receive information about it or its owner.

Final Thoughts

Each and every one of us experiences flashes of intuition. Our intuition is there to guide us and to help us make life run more smoothly. The “clairs” are some of the most prominent ways we receive intuitive messages and we would do well to work on developing these gifts so the messages come more clearly and easier to understand. In the next post I will discuss ways to develop your intuition.
